Visiting Professor Dr. Michael Bender

During the week 20-25 March we will host Dr. Michael Bender (Institut für Sprach- und Literaturwissenschaft, Technische Universität Darmstadt) for an intensive week on data/corpus annotation. 

He will be giving an introduction to "Inception", currently regarded as the best annotation tool, developed at the University of Darmstadt itself. 

He will be giving Two lectures and two hands-on sessions and offering time for your own presentations and discussion of potential relevance of annotation to your topics.

It would be interesting to learn how many of you are interested in participating, as it will help us organize the right room. Instructions for registration will follow shortly.


Programme:

Tuesday, March 21, 10 am - 1 pm:

  • Lecture "Annotation methods in digital linguistics".
  • Introduction to digital linguistics (research perspectives - methods - subjects)
  • Introduction to annotation methods (research subjects - segmentation - granularity - robustness)
  • Pragmatic annotation
  • Collaborative workflows 

Wednesday, March 22, 10 am - 1 pm:

Lecture "Annotation - what next?“ 
"Operationalization, quantitative analysis, annotation by query, combination with corpus queries and machine learning"


+ short Hands-On-Introduction to INCEpTION, again with examples from research (see above)

Wednesday, March 22, 2 - 5 pm:

  • Discussion of PHD and student projects
  • Consultation on digital methods
  • Hands-on work with data samples brought in by students (focus on INCEpTION)

Thursday, March 23, 10 am - 1 pm:

  • Discussion of PHD and student projects
  • Advice on digital methods
  • Hands-On working with data samples brought by students (focus on INCEpTION)
