Digital Humanities and Digital Communication:
From digital data to digital tools for research and publishing
Unimore Doctoral Programme in Human Sciences
THE FOCUS
Digital Humanities (DH) is a field in such a rapid expansion that its boundaries are difficult to identify. The easy access to digital resources and tools is giving rise to new scholarly practices in many different fields: the language sciences, literary studies, philosophy, history, the social sciences at large. On the one hand we have studies of digital communication and of the impact that the digital world is having on present day communication, memory and learning but also on the nature of digital-born data as such. On the other we have different kinds of data to be digitalized: textual, visual, auditory, often from historical documents to be transcribed or interpreted. The researcher also needs to be able to perform a number of operations with the data, ranging from acquisition to annotation and analysis. Finally, today’s researchers are facing the challenge of different forms of digital publishing, and new practices in the communication of their own knowledge.
The aim of the summer school is to reflect this variety of problems and perspectives. The disciplines covered will include all fields of the humanities. Aspects involved are:
- digital data/digital communication/social media
- digital publishing (and open access)
- digital public history and digital museum communication
- archives and corpora: creation, digitization, transcription
- annotation, querying, exploration and analysis of data (including - visual analytics of texts)
- identification of similarities, authorship attribution, clustering, extraction and annotation of themes and topics, extraction of recurring patterns and traits, language models
- exploration of corpora/archives for the study of cultural and or historical trends
- digital education and learning analytics

APPLICATION PROCEDURE and DEADLINES
Enrolement in the summer school includes:
- tuition and study materials
- coffee breaks
- WiFi access at the summer school venue
The total number of students will be limited to 24, part of them selected by the members of the international Board of the PhD programme.
Applicants from universities of members of the international Board of the PhD programme must agree their submission with their institutional coordinators before submitting their application to the summer school. They will be asked to present their research project at the end of the summer school. They will be offered enrolment and accomodation for the whole duration of the summer school (4/5 nights). Students from international partner institutions will be hosted in double rooms. Please notice that while students are allowed to find alternative solutions for their accommodation, this will be at their expense.
Application form
The application form includes:
1. a 400 words abstract of the PhD project
2. a short CV according to a given model (see appendix)
The deadline for all the applications for the summer school is March 31st, 2019. All applicants will be informed about the selection of participants before the April 15th.
SELECTION PROCESS AND CRITERIA
The selection of doctoral students from Unimore is based on a review process organised by the scientific committee of the summer school. This process is open to all PhD students (including students from the consortium universities not selected by their institutional coordinators). The application will be subjected to a double blind peer review. Based on this review, the scientific committee of the summer school will select the participants.
Members of the international board of the PhD programme are responsible for promoting the summer school within their institution and and are fully autonomous in selecting their PhD student(s).
For both pathways, the selection criteria are:
- quality of the PhD project, assessed in relation to its i) theoretical approach, ii) methodological standards and iii) potential for innovation;
- the relevance of the aims and objectives of the PhD project within the areas covered.
