The Doctoral Programme in Human Sciences includes four curricula:

• Linguistic and Literary studies;
• Historical, philosophical and social studies;
• Theories and methods of intercultural education
• Digital Humanities and Digital Communication

Programme description and aims

The Human Sciences Doctoral Programme aims to train specialized researchers in linguistic analysis, narrative theory, contemporary history, intercultural communication, didactics and learning studies. The program combines different areas of research in order to provide PhD students with multiple skills: they will be able both to assist educational projects and to get involved in social and cultural actives, ranging from the area of publishing to research on public and professional communication.
Researchers will acquire the necessary skills to develop, manage and convey applied research projects concerning different research areas, such as linguistic and cultural translation/mediation, and professional communication (in the publishing industry, in productions system, in the social fabric). They could also be involved in projects concerning language training, cultural and museum activities (both in private and public institutions); or the creation of linguistic tools (such as dictionaries, corpora, terminological databases, etc.). With regard to the Digital Humanities’ curriculum, the acquired skills will range from the creation of devices for the Humanities (digital archives, databases and corpora), to the development and application of new IT technologies. Skills will also include data analysis, multimodal and multimedia communication, new media communication studies and on the new ways to access the knowledge.
Particular attention will be paid to methodological and soft skills.

Career and Professional Opportunities

Human Science researchers will acquire the necessary skills to be involved in cultural and social activities, both in the public and private sector, either in Italy or abroad: these include academic research, education, publishing, public and business communication, and museum management. Notably, they can find career opportunities in the field of learning processes (as well as the diagnosis and therapy of cognitive or procedural learning disorders), in the development and management of both linguistic and cultural translation/mediation projects and programs (in the publishing industry and in international companies). PhD graduates will also find career options in cultural projects (both in public and private institutions), in the creation of language devices, in activities linked to cooperation, in science journalism, in the field of education and in the context of lifelong learning. The analysis of learning and educational processes will create professional figures able to solve prevention and recovery problems, integration and cross-cultural matters. With regards to the Digital Humanities (DH), besides its contribution to the progress of different disciplines’ methods, and to interdisciplinary development, it is important to consider the impact of DH projects as technological, formative and cultural innovation.
